Introduction

Learning Objectives

After completing this module, you should be able to explain technical characteristics of major energy alternatives such as power density (and land requirement), form of energy supply (electricity, liquid fuel…etc.), need for energy storage (intermittent supply), and the need for more transmission lines between areas of production and use. In addition, you should be able to explain how these characteristics may affect any transition away from fossil fuels.

One major requirement for reducing greenhouse gas emissions is to develop alternatives to fossil fuels to supply our energy needs. Major alternatives include renewable energy sources (hydroelectricity, solar, wind, geothermal, tidal..etc.), nuclear, and energy conservation. In this lesson you will explore key characteristics of renewable energy systems which will help you think about the broader changes that would be required in our society to move from fossil fuels to renewables.
