About the cover art and artist
Katelyn Michael (artist) is a graduate student in Chemistry working on the electrochemical degradation of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). To quantify the products of the degradation, fluoride and formate ions, Katelyn utilizes ion chromatography. At low concentrations of ions, Katelyn observes good separation of the fluoride and formate peaks. At high concentrations, the peaks overlap, resulting in significant asymmetry (resembling a shark fin) which must be resolved before quantifying the peaks. Through a set of experiments, Katelyn identified the main issue was column overload (signified by an overwhelmed emoji). Column overload can be avoided by diluting the sample with mobile phase, or reducing the initial sample volume. Visit this link to learn more about research happening in Song Jin’s research lab.
