Each pre-class Podia question is based on the pre-class material and working through the pre-class material will help you formulate your response. Consider the problem and write down/draw out your solution in your class notebook. These questions are designed to hone your skills so that you can analyze and solve mastery problems you will encounter throughout the course.
Two days before the next whole-class session, the pre-class Podia question will become visible in Podia, where you can click on the prompt and submit your answer.
Submissions for pre-class Podia activities are due 1 hour before the start of your whole-class. Be sure to submit your response before the due time.
Day 11 Pre-Class Podia Activity
The 3-D model of an allene molecule can be viewed here.
Use the wedge-and-dash notation to draw two 3-D Lewis structures of an allene molecule. Each wedge-and-dash structure should be viewed from a different perspective. If there are any lone pairs and/or formal charges, be sure to include them.
Describe the bonding in allene in terms of valence bond theory. For each carbon atom, provide the hybridization of the atom, and draw a picture (or pictures) showing the orbital overlaps that give rise to all bonds within this molecule. (hint: make sure that your model depicts the correct orientations of any unhybridized p orbitals.) Using your model, explain how the hydrogen atoms in this structure are oriented in two perpendicular planes.
