Each pre-class Podia question is based on the pre-class material and working through the pre-class material will help you formulate your response. Consider the problem and write down/draw out your solution in your class notebook. These questions are designed to hone your skills so that you can analyze and solve mastery problems you will encounter throughout the course.

Two days before the next whole-class session, the pre-class Podia question will become visible in Podia, where you can click on the prompt and submit your answer.

Submissions for pre-class Podia activities are due 1 hour before the start of your whole-class. Be sure to submit your response before the due time.

Day 37 Pre-Class Podia Activity

Drugs are often reacted with hydrochloric acid, HCl(aq), to generate “hydrochloride salts” that dissolve more easily in the gastrointestinal tract and have longer shelf-lives. For example, the hydrochloride salt of methamphetamine is sold under the brand name Desoxyn and is approved by the FDA for treating ADHD. The structure of methamphetamine is provided at right; draw the structure of methamphetamine hydrochloride.

Consider a 0.01 M aqueous solution of methamphetamine hydrochloride (pKa = 10.1). What is the pH of this solution?

Which of the following drugs will react with HCl(aq) to produce hydrochloride salts? What structural feature(s) did you base your choice(s) on?

Heroin

MDMA

THC

GHB
