Consider the problem and write down/draw out your solution in your class notebook. These questions are designed to hone your skills so that you can analyze and solve mastery problems you will encounter throughout the course.
Two days before the next whole-class session, the pre-class Podia question will become visible in Podia, where you can click on the prompt and submit your answer.
Submissions for pre-class Podia activities are due 1 hour before the start of your whole-class. Be sure to submit your response before the due time.
Day 39 Pre-Class Podia Activity
The reaction mechanism for the hydration of propene is presented below.
Analyze this mechanism by:
- identifying the nucleophile and the electrophile in each step
- describing in your own words the meaning of each arrow represented in the mechanism
- identifying all acid-base reaction steps in the mechanism
- inferring the role that H3O+ plays in the reaction
- inferring which step is likely to the slowest step in the mechanism
Use the results of your analysis to:
- sketch a reaction progress diagram for the reaction
- infer the rate law for the reaction
- predict the effect of raising pH on the rate of the reaction
