When should I take English 100?

You should take English 100 in your first year. Whether you take English 100 in the fall or spring is a choice that may depend on your schedule, requirements for your major or other university programs, and availability of open sections. The E100 Program strives to provide consistent high-quality instruction across sections and semesters.

What do I do if I can’t get into English 100?

Continue to monitor English 100 sections online to see if any seats open up. You may need to register for a section that’s not your ideal time. You may want to consult with the Director or Associate Director of E100 if you have very important reasons to take the course that semester.

Should I attend a class to see if I can get added?

You may want to visit a class on the first day, but you will not be added to a section if it has reached its 19-person limit. The only way to get into a section is if someone drops.

Can I get into a section even if it’s at the 19-person limit?

No. English 100 is a writing-intensive course that requires smaller enrollment for the instructional benefit to the student.

Can I register for a dorm section even if I don’t live in that dorm?

Dorm sections are restricted to dorm residents. However, you may consult with the Director or Associate Director if there is an important reason to take English 100 that semester and the open seats are in a dorm section.

Can I register for a FIG section even if I’m not in that FIG?

No. First Year Interest Group (FIG) sections are restricted to students in the FIG. No exceptions will be made.

Do I have to take English 100?

You may take English 100 to fulfill the Comm-A requirement if your prior course work does not fulfill the requirement. However, English 100 is primarily for first-year students.

Are there other ways to fulfill the Comm-A requirement?

There are other courses that fulfill the Comm-A requirement (for example, Com Arts 100). Students with advanced standing may be registered in certain circumstances and if you are a transfer student and/or student with advanced standing, you should consult with the Director or Associate Director to determine a course of action best suited to your situation.
