Fruits
Introduction:
Whether you have an interest in growing fruit crops or no desire at all, this module can give you appreciation about the amount of work involved in growing fruit. Most fruit crops require extra care and special attention to be truly productive. Wisconsin’s short growing season and cold winters mean some fruit crops can’t be grown at all and others can be grown only when specific cultivars are selected. This section describes basic recommended cultural practices for common small fruit and tree fruit crops in Wisconsin.
As you read through the material and watch the videos, think about any fruit you may have grown in your yard, are considering growing, or that you enjoy eating! Under Supplemental Materials you will find additional videos on four different fruits. While you may find them helpful to watch especially if you have an interest in growing each fruit, they are not required. Many of these videos are under four minutes long. The Practice activity included in this section will help reinforce some important lessons for this chapter.
Objectives:
After completing the reading in the manual, online module, and class activities, you will:
- Identify the factors to consider when selecting fruit crops and cultivars;
- Define and give examples of pollenizer and pollinator.
