Vegetables

Introduction:

Watch the introductory video from Julie Hill, Horticulture Outreach Specialist for UW-Madison, Division of Extension Walworth and Rock Counties.

Despite Wisconsin’s relatively short growing season, vegetable gardening continues to grow in popularity. Do you have an overflowing vegetable garden every year? Or maybe a couple of tomato plants in containers on your patio? Or you don’t have the space for vegetable growing at home, but you enjoy eating fresh produce? Whether you are growing vegetables in a container or in the ground, are involved with a local community garden, or hope to grow your own vegetables someday, vegetable gardening can contribute significantly to your own household food supply and that of your community. To be successful, it is helpful to understand plant development and the variety of cultural practices for optimal production.

Objectives:

After completing the reading in the manual, online module, and class activities, you will:

  • Distinguish vegetable classification by plant family, by plant part, and by season of growth;
  • List and describe considerations when preparing a vegetable garden and selecting plants;
  • Define the vegetable planting techniques of sequential/succession planting and crop rotation as they apply to IPM.
