Woody Ornamentals

Introduction:

Watch the introductory video from Janell Wehr, Horticulture Outreach Specialist, UW-Madison, Division of Extension Marathon and Wood Counties.

Woody ornamentals include trees, shrubs, and vines. Understanding how woody plants function is important in avoiding common mistakes when selecting, planting, or maintaining them. As you read through the material and watch the videos, think of the trees and shrubs growing near where you live or at the places you work and play. What types of things can you notice about them regarding how they are planted or cared for?

Objectives:

After completing the reading in the manual, online module, and class activities, you will:

  • Describe the function of these tissues in woody plants: bark, phloem, cambium, xylem and pith;
  • Identify the steps for proper tree and shrub planting;
  • Describe the following basic practices for caring for an established tree or shrub: watering, mulching, fertilizing and pruning.
