Guidelines for Preparing a Strong Application

  1. Research programs THOROUGHLY! A strong graduate school application begins with in-depth research of the program. BEFORE you apply, you should understand the program’s curriculum, faculty expertise, research focus (if applicable), and overall culture. Explore program websites, attend information sessions, and connect with current students or alumni to gain comprehensive insights. This diligent research will not only strengthen your application but also help you determine if the program aligns with your academic and career goals.
  2. Follow ALL application directions carefully! It’s crucial to carefully review each program’s specific requirements to ensure all necessary materials are submitted.
  3. Tailor materials to the institution! You want to showcase why you are interested in and a good fit for THEIR specific program. Also, be mindful that you are submitting the right materials for each program.
  4. Proofread, proofread, and ask others to help you proofread! Programs will be looking for attention to detail. You want to be sure that you’re materials are free of errors. Later sections of this guide include resources and support to help you with the proofreading process.
  5. Remember that most programs complete a holistic review! This means they evaluate applicants as whole individuals, rather than solely focusing on specific metrics like GPA or test scores. Admissions committees consider a variety of factors, including academic performance, research experience, extracurricular activities, personal statements, letters of recommendation, and overall fit with the program. If there is one area of your application that you are concerned about (and cannot change) ask yourself where you can stand out in other areas.
  6. Continue reading this guide! In each of the subsequent sections of this guide, you will find additional information about the application components as well as helpful tips and important notes (when applicable).
