Standardized Test Scores
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test that is sometimes required for admission to graduate programs. It assesses verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing skills.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Many psychology graduate programs have adopted optional GRE policies.
HELPFUL TIP: For applicants considering whether to submit a GRE score when it is optional, carefully evaluate the strengths of your overall application and determine if a standardized test score will enhance your candidacy.
If you decide to take the GRE, be sure to allocate sufficient time for study and test registration through the official GRE Website. Want more support? Consult this Beginners Guide.
The GRE Psychology Subject Test is an additional assessment that is required by a select few PhD and PsyD programs. It measures knowledge in specific psychology domains. However, it’s not universally required and should only be considered if required by a program of interest. If it is required, be mindful of scheduling since the subject tests are only offered a few times each year.
