Course Requirements

Credit Requirements

Students complete the program over 4-7 years, earning a minimum of 51 credits.

  • 32 credits must be completed in residence, meaning at UW-Madison
  • 26 credits must be graduate-level coursework. A course that meets this requirement will have the course attribute “50% Graduate Coursework Requirement” listed in course details.

For all current requirements to complete your degree (e.g., credits, courses, milestones, learning outcomes/goals, etc.), see your specific Named Option page in The Guide:

Graduate Seminar (KINES 900) Requirement

All students are required to register for the Kinesiology 900 Seminar each semester that they are enrolled in the program. Any requests for a seminar waiver (due to TA course conflicts, research activities outside the Madison area, etc.) must be made to the Graduate Studies Committee a minimum of 4 weeks prior to the start of the semester when the waiver is desired.

Research in Physical Activity-Theory and Design (KINES 991) Requirement

All students in the MS and PhD research-track programs are required to enroll in KINES 991.

General Field Requirement

A doctoral minor or graduate/professional certificate is not required due to the broad areas of inquiry within Kinesiology. To ensure the breadth of study requirement is achieved, students are required to complete a minimum of 2 graduate level courses (at least 2 credits each) in Kinesiology, outside of their named option coursework.

Electives

Recommended electives for each named option are listed in The Guide. This list is not comprehensive—elective choices should be discussed and planned in consultation with your faculty advisor. You’re also welcome to contact the Graduate Program Manager for additional guidance.
