Internship Requirement (KINES 690)

All students in the MS Kinesiology – Applied Exercise Science program are required to complete an internship (KINES 690) for a minimum of 1 credit during at least one semester of their program. This internship is a key component of your academic experience and is intended to help you apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings, build professional skills, and strengthen your career readiness.

Purpose and Relevance

Your internship should be aligned with your career interests and goals.

Examples of relevant settings include:

  • Strength and conditioning facilities
  • Corporate or community wellness programs
  • Rehabilitation or clinical environments
  • Sport performance centers
  • Research labs focused on exercise science or health promotion
  • Teaching projects, such as assisting in an undergraduate course, developing instructional materials, or implementing a fitness education curriculum (must be supervised by a faculty member)

Students are encouraged to pursue opportunities that allow them to engage meaningfully with professionals in the field, gain hands-on experience, and reflect on how their coursework translates into applied practice

Credit and Timing

  • You must enroll in KINES 690 during the same semester you are completing the internship.
  • 1 credit typically corresponds to about 45 hours of work over the course of the semester. You may register for 1 to 6 credits, depending on the scope of your internship and how it fits into your overall academic plan. Consult with the Graduate Program Manager if you’re unsure how many credits to take.
  • Internships may be completed in fall, spring, or summer.

Planning and Approval

Before starting your internship, you must:

  1. Secure an internship site that aligns with your academic and career interests.
  2. Obtain approval from the Graduate Program Manager to ensure the experience meets program requirements.
  3. Enroll in KINES 690 for the appropriate number of credits (1–6), based on the number of hours you plan to complete during your internship.
