As you begin your graduate studies, here are a few key steps to take:

  • Attend Department and School of Education Orientations
Meet new students and get acquainted with the program. If you are going to be a teaching or research assistant, be sure to attend relevant and required training.
  • Attend the Department Welcome/Welcome Back Event
Kick off the semester by meeting faculty, staff, and fellow students at an informal gathering off campus. It’s a great way to start building connections!
  • Meet with Your Faculty Advisor
Discuss your academic goals, plan your coursework, and get guidance on program expectations and milestones.
  • Enroll in Required Courses
Check the Graduate Handbook and consult with your advisor to register for core and elective classes.
  • Review the Graduate Student Handbook
Familiarize yourself with departmental policies, degree requirements, and available resources.
  • Join the Kinesiology Graduate Student Organizations
Connect with peers, engage in professional development, and stay involved in department activities.
  • Get Involved in Research or Community Engagement
Talk to your advisor about opportunities to contribute to ongoing projects or outreach initiatives.
  • Get to Know Campus and the Madison Community
Take time to explore UW–Madison’s campus and local spots. Take a walk down State Street, visit the Farmer’s Market, check out the bike path… getting familiar with your surroundings can help you feel more at home in your new environment!
