My Amharic Reading & Writing Practice Guide

Since I am continuing with the Multilanguage Seminar, I wanted to create a resource that i plan on using this semester. it actaully focuses on the two areas of Amharic that I want to improve the most this semester reading and writing. I made this guide to give myself something simple that I can come back to when I practice. some type of stucture in my learning jounrey.

Reading Practice

Step 1: Practice the Fidel

I will spend time reviewing the Amharic alphabet and practicing letters that I still mix up. I will practice reading the letters out loud and writing them down so I can become more familiar with them.

Step 2: Read Familiar Words

I will start with simple words that I already know or have seen before. I will try to recognize the word first instead of sounding out every single letter.

Step 3: Read Short Sentences

Once I feel more comfortable with individual words, I will practice reading short sentences about everyday topics like family, school, food, and daily routines.

Step 4: Check My Understanding

After reading something, I will write down what I think it means before looking at the English translation. This will help me see how much I actually understand on my own.

My Reading Check-In

After each reading activity, I can ask myself questions like-

  • How many words did I recognize?
  • Which letters or words were difficult?
  • Did I understand the main idea?
  • Did I have to translate every word?
  • What new words did I learn?

 Writing Practice

Level 1: Words- lowks mostly memorization

Practice writing:

  • My name
  • Family members’ names
  • Places
  • Food
  • School-related words
  • Other everyday vocabulary

Level 2: Sentences

Practice writing simple sentences about:

  • Myself
  • My family
  • Things I like
  • School
  • My hobbies
  • My daily routine

Level 3: Short Paragraphs

Once I am more comfortable, I will tryyyy write 3–5 sentences about a familiar topic. like I will focus on spelling, sentence structure, and making sure my ideas make sense.

My Progress Tracker

Week Reading Progress Writing Progress
Week 1 Words/letters I recognized Words/sentences I could write
Week 5 Words/sentences I can read Sentences I can write
Week 10 Short texts I can understand Paragraphs I can write
End of Semester What I can read now What I can write now

My Goal

By the end of the semester, im hopinggggg be able to look at a simple Amharic text and understand the main idea without immediately depending on English. evenb hto its the defult i need to change my wiring. I also want to be able to write a short paragraph about myself, my family, school, or my everyday life. I will use my reading and writing samples to see how much I have improved throughout the semester.i know i have to be realstic im not going to write a book or anything but just the best i can.
