Odyssey Beyond Bars Tutor Agreement
By signing this Agreement, I agree to perform the following duties in relation to my work with Odyssey Beyond Bars (OBB). These duties are also listed in the Instructor Handbook provided with this Agreement. (Please initial each point below).
Pre-course
____ I will read the Instructor, Tutor, and Volunteer Guide.
____ I will ask OBB staff to clarify any points in the Instructor, Tutor and Volunteer Guide I do not understand.
____ I will complete all paperwork required by the DOC.
____ I will attend a Dept. of Corrections (DOC) orientation, if required by DOC.
____ I will allow DOC to make a record of my fingerprints, if required by DOC.
____ I will complete all paperwork required by OBB and UW-Madison.
____ I will attend an OBB orientation and any additional required trainings.
____ I will log into the prison-based Learning Management System and review the course I’m tutoring for.
Instruction
For online tutors during the semester:
____ I will tutor during the assigned time, being ready/logged in five minutes prior to starting.
____ I will alert the OBB tutor coordinator as soon as possible if illness or a conflict interferes with my tutoring time.
____ I will communicate with the instructor for my class on a weekly basis.
For in-person tutors during the semester:
____ I will be on time at a pre-arranged location to get transportation to the correctional facility or, alternatively, meet other tutors at the correctional facility at the appointed time for smooth entry into the facility.
____ I will alert the OBB tutor coordinator as soon as possible if illness or a conflict interferes with my tutoring time.
____ I will be appropriately dressed per DOC protocols.
____ I will follow all guidelines regarding what is allowed inside the facility.
____ I will communicate with the instructor for my class on a weekly basis.
Communication Requirements
____ I agree to copy (cc) the OBB Program Manager on all emails to DOC staff and alert the Program Manager of any communications I have with DOC staff that have substantial impacts on a student or the program. (You will be helping to build UW-Madison’s relationship with DOC staff in the prison where you work, and it is important to share communications with our administrative team.)
Research
____ I understand that I cannot conduct research of any kind involving current, former or prospective students in this program without prior written approval from the OBB Director, UW-Madison’s Institutional Review Board, and DOC’s Research and Policy Unit.
Media Policy
____ I understand that if I am contacted by any news reporters, media producers or any UW-Madison or DOC communications staff person about my work in OBB, I must contact the OBB Director before speaking to that person. Media coverage of OBB students is very strictly controlled by UW-Madison and the DOC.
