28 Tutoring Basics (In person)

  • Tutoring is a mandatory part of the class. Put a sign-up sheet out and ask the students to sign in so you can keep track of who has attended.
  • Students are not obliged to stay for the entire two hours of tutoring, so students may come and go at Oakhill where there is more freedom of movement. It is unlikely that students at GBCI will have this same freedom of movement.
  • In-person tutoring allows for much more flexibility. Tutors can set up impromptu peer review and discussion groups and can also work with students one-on-one. Typically, tutors will get the chance to work with a variety of students each session and we encourage you to offer your help to every one of the students–just so students have the opportunity to work with a variety of tutors throughout the semester.
  • Students are also able to use tutoring time as worktime. This may be one of the few times when they will be able to access computers. Even if typing up work is the student’s main intention, you should still check in with them to see what kind of support they need.
  • The reader for the course you tutor for will be provided to you in hard copy. This is for your reference only.
