27 Tutoring Basics (Zoom)

  • Tutoring is a mandatory part of the class. Please note who attends each week.
  • Typical tutoring groups via Zoom are 3-4 students per hour and students are in the same room together using just one camera.
  • For a session with 3 students on Zoom, break time up into 15 minute increments to make sure that everyone gets a turn to talk and have focus on their work.
  • Please do not hesitate to have students sit near to the camera and speak clearly. Sound issues at some sites have been an obstacle due to students spreading out and because other students are often in the room working. We are working on figuring out a more controlled environment for our tutoring sessions
  • Please do not hesitate to ask students to put away their laptops and focus on discussion. In some institutions such as RCI, students have better access to a laptop.
  • Outside your tutoring session, you will have LMS access to all classes that you tutor for, via which you can communicate with students.
  • OBB sets up the Zoom for all tutoring sessions. The Zoom links will be specific to the prison, but they will be set up in a way that allows for easy access. Closer to the start of tutoring, you will receive an Outlook invite for the sessions with the Zoom link included. If you’re able to accept, you’ll have the Zoom link available in your calendar each week.
  • We prefer that you are located in an area during your Zoom session that does not allow others to observe the session–for privacy reasons.
  • Your comfort with the location is important. You may want to consider what objects/background will be within the camera’s view.
  • The reader for the course you tutor for will be provided to you in hard copy. This is for your reference only.
