23 Using Technology in the Classroom

  • Instructors often do not have access to technology in the classroom. In addition to not having access to your phone, DOC computers disable the use of social media and many search engines. If you require specific access to technology, contact the Academic Program Manager to develop a solution that works within the limitations of the prisons.
  • Students will have access to DOC-furnished computers, but, depending on the location, they may have very limited access. At minimum-security institutions like Oakhill, where incarcerated individuals have more freedom of movement, students have greater access to classrooms and computer labs throughout the week. At Columbia Correctional, students might only have access to computers during class time and tutoring. If you have questions about how these limitations might impact assignment deadlines, contact the Academic Program Manager.
  • You will hear students and DOC staff refer to a student computer as a “RACHEL.” RACHEL stands for Remote Area Community Hotspot for Education and Learning. These computers are the only way that students can access secure communications for education. There are limited reference materials and resources for students on RACHEL, including downloaded TED Talks and other educational materials. Contact the Academic Program Manager if you’re interested in using resources students have available via RACHEL.
