The UW-Madison Writer’s Handbook

The Writer’s Handbook has been a longstanding resource at UW, and over the years, a large number of Writing Center staff members and graduate instructors have played a role in its evolution.

The UW-Madison Writing Center has highlighted working toward educational equity and social justice as one of its major aims. Providing access to online instruction and online instructional resources is one of the ways that the Writing Center works to expand access to writing- and genre-literacy-related learning opportunities.

The Writing Center is deeply embedded in the culture of teaching and learning at UW-Madison, and as a well-known writing center in the United States, its resources support students and instructors beyond Wisconsin. To expand access to this resource and support instructors interested in adapting aspects of it to their own classroom contexts, in 2020, the Writing Center team added an open license to these instructional materials.
