This is the first lesson based on a lecture by Alima Bissenova. You will watch four video clips and complete exercises based on those clips. This lesson consists of the following sections: Историческая справка, Знакомство, Введение, Интервью, Современный взгляд, Заключение.

What You Will Learn:

In this lesson, professor Alima Bissenova discusses an interview that prominent Russian journalist and YouTuber, Yuri Dud, conducted with members of the Kazakh musical group Irina Kairatovna. She uses an excerpt from that interview to illustrate differing perspectives on how the “East” is understood in discussions of gender relations and domestic violence in Kazakhstan. You will also learn about this issue from a Kazakh human rights activist and an expert from the Institute of Parliamentarism.

WARNING: This lesson addresses the topic of domestic violence, specifically Проблема домашнего насилия в Казахстане. While there is no explicit description of the domestic violence incidents, the content may be disturbing to some people.
