Kazakhstan has a diverse population, made up of more than 120 ethnic groups. Part of the reason for this diversity is the history of deportations in the Soviet Union. From 1937 to 1944, over a million people from a variety of ethnic groups (called национальность in Russian) were deported from other parts of the Soviet Union to Kazakhstan, and others were sent to other places. The activity below will help you learn a little about these deportations.
