Lesson Description:

If this is the first time you are using a RAILS lesson, we recommend that you take a look at the page About the lessons to make sure that you understand how some features of the lessons work.

This is the third lesson based on an interview with Kazakh artist Aigerim Kapar. You will watch four video clips and complete exercises based on those clips. This lesson consists of the following sections: Степные озёра, Перформанс в защиту озёр Талдыколь, Озеро Балхаш, Сары-Шаганский полигон, and Заключение.

You can find the Помощник and Словарь at the end of the lesson for easy reference, but they are also available in the lesson in places where you are most likely to need them.

What You Will Learn:

In this lesson, you will learn about some of the ecological problems and catastrophes in Kazakhstan and the work that Aigerim Kapar and her colleagues have done to protest and work against them. You will learn about the Taldykol lakes in Astana and a group of performance art actions to protest their destruction, Lake Balkhash and the ecological problems that it is facing, and the Sary Shagan ballistic missile testing range located on Lake Balkhash.

Learning Tips:

To navigate through the lesson linearly, click the red “Next” button in the bottom right whenever you are ready to move on to the next page.
