G2.1 Criteria for Admission to the Graduate Programs
Applicants with a BA in Portuguese or Spanish should have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.00 on a four-point scale, and a GPA in Portuguese or Spanish courses of at least 3.25. Students with an MA in Spanish or Portuguese should have a GPA of at least 3.40 in graduate work in Spanish or Portuguese. MA equivalency may be considered in the case of candidates who have obtained at another institution a number of degree credits comparable with those necessary for our MA degree.
The Admissions Committee may make exceptions to these requirements. Students granted regular admission with deficiencies must make up such deficiencies following enrollment in addition to meeting regular degree requirements.
Applicants who have a BA in Portuguese or Spanish with an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.00 and a GPA of at least 3.00 in Portuguese or Spanish courses may be admitted to the MA program on probation. Applicants who have an MA degree in Portuguese or Spanish with a graduate GPA of at least 3.00 may be admitted to the PhD program on probation. Any exceptions to these requirements for admission on probation must be recommended by the Graduate Studies Committee and approved by the Departmental Committee or Executive Committee, as appropriate.
