G3.1 MA and PhD Credit Requirements

In order to complete a PhD, students must earn a minimum of 51 total credits. 33 of the 51 credits must qualify as graduate-level work as designated by the graduate-level course attribute in the UW-Madison Course Guide. 24 of those 33 graduate-level credits must be taken within the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Credits earned toward the PhD minor, toward language requirements, and in Spanish 770 “Introduction to the Profession” all count toward the 51-credit minimum. A limited number of transfer credits may also count toward the minimum, as explained below. All candidates for the PhD in Spanish must include in their programs a PhD minor, in accordance with the requirements of the Graduate School.
