G9.10 Guidelines for Lecturer Class Assignments in Spanish 311 and Above
The chair of the department in consultation with the associate chair and the director of the language program will make appointments for lecturer positions for ABD students in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the level of Spanish 311 and above, in the event of and urgent need to cover courses. The department chair will submit to the Departmental Committee or the Executive Committee, as appropriate, the proposed lecturer assignments for approval and appointment.
Each TA in Spanish who is ABD and making satisfactory progress toward their degree, as certified by their advisor, will be assigned one section of Spanish 311. Students on probation will not be assigned teaching duties in Spanish 311.
One of the goals of allowing PhD-ABDs to teach this course is to provide them experience with advanced writing courses that will be helpful for the professionalization and market. The committee in charge of choosing the instructors will take in consideration years of teaching and time to degree.
Committee’s Criteria
To be eligible to teach at the level of Spanish 311, students must have taught regularly in the program, including Spanish 226, and the average of their teaching evaluation means should be at minimum in the “good” category (this is at least 4.0 on a 5.0 scale).
Preference will be given to students who have not taught this course before and who are in the process of writing their dissertation. A ranking of various eligible students’ teaching evaluation averages will be used to establish order of preference, if necessary.
Assignment of any course above 311, should grant preference to ABD candidates who are at the final stages of their dissertation, as certified by their advisor, and who have proof of excellence in teaching (i.e. course and coordinator evaluations). Allowing ABD students to teach upper-level courses provides them with an opportunity to design their own syllabi and to teach topics that are related to their own work and that will enhance their marketability.
All those teaching 311 and above should be observed by their advisor. This helps encourage professionalism and preparedness for the market. If the advisor is unable to do this observation (due to a sabbatical or other leave), the director of the language program is next in line.
