G9.3 Absense Policy
If, for any reason, a TA cannot meet class, the TA should ask a fellow TA in the same course to cover the class as “colleague coverage.” Colleague coverage consists of a voluntary and unpaid substitution that is a favor to be repaid in kind. If another qualified TA agrees to provide colleague coverage, the TA who is going to be absent should then inform the course coordinator in writing of the problem and of the arrangement made. The coordinator must then approve the arrangement. The TA who is going to be absent is responsible for ensuring that the substitute knows exactly material is to be covered and what activities are to be completed on the day or days of the substitution.
If a TA who is going to be absent cannot arrange colleague coverage, that TA must inform the course coordinator immediately. If unable to reach the coordinator in an emergency, the TA must inform one of the office staff in 1014 or 1018 Van Hise and request that the class be notified of the absence. TAs should not ask any of the office staff in 1014 or 1018 Van Hise to find substitutes for them.
If a TA needs to request a lengthy absence, the coordinator, in conjunction with the graduate coordinator, will arrange with the TA for a more permanent, paid substitute.
