G1.1 Graduate Program Mission Statement

The MA program in Spanish is designed to familiarize students with the variety and depth of Spanish and Spanish American literature, literary criticism, cultural studies and linguistics. The PhD program in literature offers concentration in six literary fields: Medieval, Early Modern Spanish, Modern Peninsular, Colonial Spanish American, Modern Spanish American, Latinx studies. The PhD program in linguistics offers concentrations in Phonetics & Phonology, Syntax, Language Variation & Change, and Applied Linguistics & Second Language Acquisition.

The MA program in Portuguese & Spanish is based on a series of core courses designed to give the student a broad knowledge of Portuguese, Brazilian, and Lusophone African literary currents. In the PhD program, the student selects a major and two supporting fields. The program of studies leading toward the PhD provides multiple opportunities for students to develop analytical skills and to integrate those skills with theoretical knowledge. Doctoral work culminates in a dissertation.
