Non-TT Job Market Support

Our department is full of incredible people with a range of different goals and skillsets. A department guidebook provides us with the opportunity to make sure that people who do not want to pursue a traditional professorship are actively (rather than passively) recognized and supported.

This section would also play a role in the support system we provide for all graduate students, TT-hopefuls and non-hopefuls alike. To treat an academic job as the single best outcome for members of our department is to do a disservice to the skills we gain through the work we do in our years here. Moreover, in an economy where stable teaching positions are difficult to come by, this attitude sets members of our community up for feelings of grief and failure if they have a difficult year on the market or decide to stop going on the market. In contrast, highlighting the wider applications for our teaching, researching, and writing skills may help graduate students acknowledge their skills’ broader relevance.

This section could include:

• Information about job opportunities beyond the tenure track
  • links to UW resources and other organizations
• Profiles of UW-English graduate students who have found
• A direct link to department BOX folder containing department letterhead file

Academic Job Market Support

• Sample job materials, dissertation and project proposals, and grant applications – shared with permission and optionally anonymized. If desired, we can password-protect some of these materials, although in an ideal world, this document will be open-access. (We have BOX for most password-protected material.)
