Book Title: Warung Sinema: Indonesian lessons for developing listening comprehension
Book Description: The Warung Sinema project contains nineteen, interactive, video-based, listening comprehension lessons for intermediate to advanced level students of Indonesian. The video clips which form the basis of each lesson are taken from popular Indonesian films of the 1990s and present a variety of topics (family dynamics, economic struggles, ethnic tensions, romance, and divorce) in a variety of ethnic regions of Indonesia. The lessons were originally developed from 2002-2004 with funding from the U.S. Department of Education International Research and Studies Program. In 2025, due to changes in technology, the lessons were updated by Sapta Abimanyu of the University of Wisconsin Madison with assistance from Shannon Donnally Quinn of Michigan State University. We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Southeast Asian Language Council (SEALC) for the 2025 updating. The original project was directed by Ellen Rafferty of the U. of Wisconsin Madison, assisted by Molly Burns and Pauli Sandjaja both of the U. of Wisconsin-Madison with the computer programming designed by Bahman Zakeri.
