The Crystal Palace
In 1851 London hosted the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations. Housed in a structure resplendent with new glass and steel building materials, the exhibition quickly became known as the Crystal Palace. Twenty-five countries competed by offering their best products combining new technologies and artistic designs. Over five million people of the working and middle classes wandered the Great Exhibition and saw the best examples of innovation and design from ancient and modern worlds. Surely such wondrous new materials and technologies creating everyday beauty would bring moral uplift.
