Grammar Notes
Prepositions
Prepositions are words that show the relationship between two nouns or pronouns in a sentence. The Yoruba language marks prepositions using different words, including ní “at or in,” sí “to,” fún “for,” pẹ̀lú “with,” láti “from,” ní iwájú “in front of,” ní ẹ̀gbẹ́ “beside,” ní ìdojúkọ “across” etc.
Examples:
- Mo jẹ ẹ̀wà pẹ̀lú búrẹ́dì. “I ate beans with bread.”
- Olú dúró pẹ̀lú Títí. “Olú stood with Títí.”
- Mo maá wa ọkọ̀ mi fún wákàtí méjìdínlógún láti Wisconsin dé Miami, Florida. “I will drive my car for eighteen hours from Wisconsin to Miami.”
- Mo máa lọ sí títì Agboawó ní ìlú Ìbàdàn “I will go to Agbowó road in Ìbàdàn”
When a preposition has more than one meaning, the context of use determines the best translation for such a preposition.
Examples:
5. Mo ra ọkọ̀ mi ní ilé ìtajà Toyota. “I bought my car at the Toyota store.”
6. Mo ń gbé ní Madison. “I live in Madison.”
Other examples are:
7. Ilé bàbá mi wà ní iwájú títì Bodíjà ní Ibàdàn “My father’s house is in front of Bodija road in Ìbàdàn.”
8. Mo máa gbé kẹ̀kẹ́ mi si ẹ̀gbé títì ” I will put my bicycle beside the road ide.”
