Descriptions of the Dictionary Sections

Each section of this dictionary aims at specific vocabulary contents that are relevant to the ACTFL performance descriptors. In the details provided below, the description of the section  focus title for the Pedagogy Dictionary is listed along with the details of the target performance. The vocabulary in each section should provide learners with the content with which they can express ideas based on the communicative goal in each section.

Beginning learners of Yoruba using this pedagogy dictionary can do or talk about:

SOCIAL INTRODUCTIONS

• Use greeting and leave-taking expressions:
• Greeting peers and by the time of day;
• Showing respect;
• Thanking people;

ASK and ANSWER SIMPLE QUESTIONS

• Talking about yourself: name, address, place of birth, age, marital status, etc.
• Using the question markers to elicit information. E.g: Kí ni?, ta ni?, kí ló dé? ṣé etc.
• Asking about people’s nationalities, age, etc.
• Asking for telephone numbers, numbers of children, etc.
• Talking about colors

ORDER A SIMPLE MEAL

• Stating food preference and other specific items in a restaurant
• Ordering meals at a restaurant
• Asking questions about food menu
• Asking how much or pricing things while shopping
• Responding to a salesperson

ROUTINES, WEATHER, SEASONAL FESTIVAL

• Talk about routines, time, and daily schedule
• Talk about the weather and occasions like weddings or  anniversaries
• Talk about days, months, seasonal festivals, and celebrations
• Use ordinal and cardinal numbers

FAMILIAR TOPICS THAT EXTEND BEYOND DAILY ROUTINE

• Expressing thoughts about what a person does, e.g., talking about a course/class, a visit.
• Talking about what you share in common with others
• Talking about an event to attend
• Talking about clothing for an event

TALKING YOURSELF, OTHERS, AND PREFERENCES

• Student can express likes and dislikes
• Talk about preferences
• Use appropriate pronouns to talk about yourself and others, nationalities, and preferences

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES AND PERSONALITIES

• Describe people’s physical attributes, e.g height, complexion, etc.; personalities, and the degree
• Talk about different types of personalities.
• Talk about what people wear and where they wear them.

MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION AND  FUTURE PLAN

• Talking about a trip and activities during a trip
• Expressing different means of travel
• Talking about places and people you or others have (or have not) visited occasionally
• Talking about a plan for the future
• Talk about different transportation systems

HOUSING, AND COMMUNITY

• Talking about houses, including types and designs
• Talking about household objects as well as their location and uses;
• Talk about some houses in communities and neighborhoods.

TALKING ABOUT PROFESSIONS

• Talking about a chosen profession
• Talking about a preferred profession
• Talking about high paying jobs

BUYING AND SELLING

• Talk about different places for shopping
• Talk about the prices of items
• Talk about different markets
• Use appropriate vocabulary relating to buying, selling,
• Use the Yoruba number system for price negotiations.

GIVING DIRECTIONS

• Talking about where or places you want to go
• Asking questions to find your way around places;
• Giving directions to people to locate buildings, places
• Giving people instructions do something
