Ukraine was among the countries most profoundly affected by the Holocaust. Scholars estimate at least one and a half million Jews were killed there. Known as Бабин Яр in Ukrainian and Бабий Яр in Russian, this ravine was the site of one of the deadliest massacres of the Holocaust.
