Peoples’ interest in traditional Kazakh culture is reflected in advertising as well. This ad, which promotes Lay’s chips with the flavor of бешбармак (a traditional Kazakh dish), shows wooden Kazakh dishes, young people playing traditional instruments, as well as a popular musician named Jah Khalib that you will learn more about on a later page. Listen to the ad and fill in the blanks based on what you hear.

Below you will watch a travel commercial. Before watching, try to predict the phrases that the commercial will use to describe Kazakhstan. Note that one of the nouns goes with two different adjectives. If you don’t know some of the words, use the Лексика, and remember to use grammar to help you. After completing the activity, watch the advertisement.

Follow-up activity 1:

Watch the following longer advertisement and be prepared to discuss with your classmates in Russian or in English (based on your instructor’s directions) the strategies that the advertisement is using to convince people to travel to Kazakhstan.

Follow-up activity 2:

Think about advertisements from your own culture. Do any of them use national imagery or symbolism as part of their message? Why do you think they do that? Which products or services are more likely to do that?

Follow-up activity 3:

Make up your own advertisement in Russian that would use the symbolism of a particular place to sell their product.
