While we do not have space to go in depth into the rich history of the Baltic countries, we picked out a couple of important events to focus on in this lesson. The first is the Holocaust.

On this page, you will watch two videos about the Holocaust in the Baltics. First you will watch one that gives statistics on the topic. Then you will watch a video in which you hear a woman named Ирена Вейсайте tell about her experience during the Holocaust in Lithuania.
First use these flash cards to acquaint yourself with some terms that will occur in the clips.

Watch the short video about the Holocaust in the Baltics and then answer the questions. The buttons on the right side of the screen allow you to skip to the point where each question is answered in the clip if you need help. You can also slow down the speed of the video by adjusting the playback rate. Depending on the size of your screen, you might find it under the 3 dots on the right side of the video player.

Now watch the second video. These are the memories and opinions of one person, so remember that they may not represent the views of all people who experienced these events.
You will notice that the video is divided into 11 clips. You can use the buttons on the left to jump to various clips or listen to clips again. There are buttons on the right in which you can find vocabulary to help you understand the clips. Underneath the video are exercises that you should complete as you watch the video. You may want to read each exercise before you begin watching the corresponding clip and then pause the video at the end of the clip so that you can complete the activity.

Depending on your teacher’s instructions, discuss the following questions with your partners in English or in Russian:
- What do you think her mother meant by these pieces of advice?
- Why do you think her mother chose these exact pieces of advice for Ирена in this moment?
- Why do you think this advice made such a strong impression on Ирена?
- What evidence do we have about whether Ирена followed her mother’s advice?
Б. Here are a few pieces of advice taken from lists of advice.
- Живи́те настоя́щим. Не ностальги́руйте по про́шлому, не мечта́йте о бу́дущем, а сконцентри́руйтесь на том, что́бы по́лностью быть здесь и сейча́с — э́то еди́нственное ме́сто и вре́мя, где́ вы мо́жете что́-то измени́ть свои́ми де́йствиями.
- Что́бы получа́ть, на́до отдава́ть. Е́сли вы подде́рживаете, ведёте и направля́ете други́х, е́сли вы ока́зываете позити́вное влия́ние на их жизнь, вы пожнёте бога́тый урожа́й.

Decide which of the pieces of advice you especially agree with and tell your partner about it and why you agree with it.
В. Has someone in your life given you good or meaningful advice? Summarize this for your partners.
