Georgia is often considered one of the oldest wine-making countries in the world. The tradition of wine-making in Georgia dates back thousands of years, and the country is known for its unique methods, including the use of clay vessels called qvevri (ქვევრი) for fermentation and storage. The ancient wine-making tradition in Georgia is recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (read more about it here: Ancient Georgian traditional Qvevri wine-making method).
“Ртвели” (რთველი)is a traditional grape harvest celebration in Georgia. This ancient cultural event marks the culmination of the grape-growing season and is a time for communities to come together to harvest the grapes that will be used to make wine. Rtveli involves festive rituals, music, dance, and feasting, creating a joyful atmosphere. Families and friends gather to pick grapes, express gratitude for the harvest, and participate in various ceremonies. It’s a significant cultural and social occasion that reflects the importance of wine and viticulture in Georgian heritage.
