Alternate Exams:

In the 2018/2019 school year syllabi, this was the policy shared with students regarding alternate exams.   Please note, the Registrar offers this guidance regarding evening exams. “Instructors who schedule evening examinations should make every possible effort to accommodate students with unavoidable conflicts.”

  • Acceptable reasons for requesting alternate exam times

    • A valid academic conflict (such as an officiall scheduled meeting for another class.)
    • An officially sanctioned UW-Sporting event in which you are a participant
    • Specific accomodations for students working with the McBurney center.
  • No accomodations will be made for other reasons, including travel and work schedules.

  • Unpredictable extenuating circumstances:

The language in the 2018/2019 syllabi reads: If you must miss an exam because of (a) illness or (b) a personal crisis (such as an automobile accident, required court appearance, death of a close relative, weather conditions which make it impossible to get to the university), then email one of the course instructors before the exam. You may be excused from the exam at the discretion of the teaching staff and possibly pending the receipt of official documentation.Unexcused exams cannot be made up and will result in failure of the course.

  • Three exams within a 24-hour period:

    •   While this is not official University policy attempts have been made to  find options. However, it is explained to the studetns that there is no  guarantee that there will be an option.
    • CURRENT GUIDANCE FROM REGISTRAR:   (Only applies to finals…) here a student has more than two summary blocks scheduled within a period of 24 hours, the instructor may, within guidelines adopted by the college or school faculty, reschedule a final exam to avoid hardship.
  • Final exams

    • The Final exam days and times are established by the Registrar’s Office up to a year prior to the current semester.   There should be  no overlapping final exam times except in rare circumstances.
    • The language in the 2018/2019 syllabi reads:  for student without special accommodations [alternate finals] will not be offered, except in the most extreme cases. Please do not make travel plans, buy plane tickets, or otherwise plan to leave the University until after the final exam.

Scheduling Alternate Exams

Alternate exams are requested via an online alternalte exam request form.  Guidance for requesting a final exam in the 2018/2019 syllabi reads:

We will be handling all alternate exam requests and scheduling (including for those receiving McBurney or other accommodations) through an online alternate exam request form.  If you need an alternate exam, you must fill out this form before Friday, 2/1.  If you file a request after this date, we can’t guarantee that we will be able to offer you an alternate exam.
