Committee Interactions

Behaviors and Practices

View the following video created by Purdue University as part of the Big Ten Academic Alliance’s Professorial Advancement Initiative (PAI). Ideally, we recommend viewing the video together with members of your search committee, but if that is not possible please view it on your own. As you view the video, keep the following considerations in mind:

  • What practices/comments do you recognize from your current and/or past experience serving on a search committee?
  • Were the opinions and ideas of all search committee members valued?
  • Did the search committee establish effective procedures for making decisions and conducting essential search activities?

During the video, several questions will pop up that you can answer.  Clicking the blue “Check” button after responding to each question will provide you with feedback on your response. Please click the “Continue” button or the “Play” arrow to continue watching the video.

If you are able to watch the video together with your search committee, there is a break during the video that provides your committee with an opportunity to discuss one of the comments made during the video.  We encourage you to take some time to engage in that discussion.  If you are watching alone, consider your own response to the discussion question. Click the “Play” arrow when you are ready to resume watching the video.
