Youth Protection and Mandated Reporter Training

Youth Protection

There are times when Master Gardener volunteers work around minors. Even through Master Gardener volunteers are not responsible for supervising youth who attend demonstrations or other programs, it is important for prospective volunteers to understand basic guidelines for working around youth.

Click on the video below to learn four simple rules for volunteering around minors.

Download and read about more Examples of Prohibited Behaviors (PDF) in Extension programs. You must report prohibited behavior to your project supervisors or Extension staff.

In addition to reporting to Extension, situations involving child abuse and neglect must also be reported to local authorities. Proceed to the next section for more details.

Mandated Reporter Training

All Extension volunteers are mandated reporters. For a brief overview of what that means, watch the video below.

Download and read Brochure: Fulfilling Your Obligation as a Mandated Reporter (PDF)

You may also want to print and save for your records.

Very important notes!

  • If you completed mandated reporter training for another organization, you are still required to participate in Extension’s training.
  • Note that there IS NO EXAM (this only applies if done through 4-H online) and no ability to print certificate (this has been turned off).
  • When you complete the mandated reporter training, come back to this course. You report your completion of the training in Setting Up Your Account later on.
