28 Incomplete Grades

If events beyond your control get  in the way of your studies—like a sudden illness or an emergency—you may be able to request an Incomplete (I) grade. This is a temporary placeholder that gives you extra time to finish your work.

Are You Eligible?

By university definition, you can request an “I” if:

  • You are currently passing the class.
  • You have only a small amount of work left to finish.
  • You have a documented reason* (like a medical issue or emergency) why you cannot finish by the end of the term.

Both master’s and capstone certificate programs use the standard university timeline and rules for resolving grades.

How to Request an Incomplete

  1. Contact your advisor immediately to discuss your situation. They will send the [Incomplete Request Form] to you and your instructor.
  2. Meet with your instructor to fill out the form. Together, you will list exactly what work is missing and set a firm deadline to finish it.
  3. Sign the form electronically along with your instructor.
  4. Email the signed form to your advisor by the following deadlines:
    • Fall Semester: The Monday after the last day of instruction.**
    • Spring/Summer Semesters: The Wednesday after the last day of instruction.**

Note: If you don’t submit the form on time, you will receive the grade you earned based on the work you already turned in.

*Informing your advisor in writing/ a meeting may count as a documented reason.

**The last day of instruction is the day before “study day,” which precedes final exam week.

Deadlines for Finishing Your Work

The university has a strict timeline. If you don’t finish your work and have your instructor submit a final grade by these dates, your “I” will turn into an “F.”

If you have an “I” in any course you must resolve it by…

    • Spring or Summer: Friday of the 8th week of the Fall term.
    • Fall: Friday of the 8th week of the Spring term.

Impact on Graduation

  • No “I” grades at graduation:
    • You cannot graduate with an unresolved Incomplete on your record.
  • Your graduation date:
    • If you finish your “I” after your original graduation term, your degree will be dated for the term you actually finished the work, not the original one.
