30 Not Meeting Academic Expectations

Any student may be placed on probation or dismissed from the program for not maintaining satisfactory academic progress, and this can impact your academic standing, financial aid (see this policy page: policy.wisc.edu/library/UW-1040), or funding (consult your sources of funding, as applicable).

Students’ satisfactory academic progress as a MS student at UW-Madison is monitored by program staff and the Graduate School. Students’ satisfactory academic progress as a Capstone Certificate student at UW-Madison is monitored by program staff and Adult Career and Special Student Services.

Student progress will be reviewed by their advisor at the end of each semester. If the advisor finds that a student has failed to achieve satisfactory progress as set in this handbook, the student will be notified and required to meet with their advisor within 2 weeks of notification. The advisor will review the student’s records with program leadership and communicate to the student if further action is needed.

Students failing to achieve satisfactory progress may be dismissed from the program or be placed on probation for one (or more) semester(s). Students placed on probation may be dismissed or allowed to continue based upon review of progress during the probationary semester. Please note that a student’s ability to remove their probationary status is dependent on a variety of factors including available credits and remaining time in the program. If a student wishes to appeal any decision stemming from this review process, they can do so within 2 weeks of the advisor meeting by request an additional meeting with their advisor and Program Director.
