Unit 1 Academic Skills Introduction

2 The Writing Process

Introduction to Academic Writing

Writing at the university level involves more than sharing personal experiences or opinions. In this course, you will learn how to critically read academic sources and use information from those sources to support your ideas. You will also learn how to conduct research using library databases and how to write a research paper using academic conventions.

Academic Writing as a Process

Academic writing in college is a step‑by‑step process, not something completed in one sitting. Writers complete smaller tasks—such as brainstorming, drafting, revising, and checking sources—to develop a strong final paper.

This process is iterative, which means writers often return to earlier steps to improve their thinking, organization, and clarity. Each small assignment in this course is designed to help you practice these skills and prepare for the final version of your work.

Key Takeaways

  • College writing is based on research and evidence, not only personal opinion.
  • Learning the writing process helps you manage large assignments step by step.
  • Practicing each stage of writing builds confidence and stronger final papers.
  • These skills prepare you for research projects in other college courses.
