Lesson 2: Проблемы равенства

This is the second lesson based on an interview with Russian scholar Maria Tendriakova. You will watch one clip from an interview with Maria Tendriakova and one clip from an interview with prominent Russian politician Irina Khakamada and complete exercises based on the clips. You will work with an excerpt from Natalia Baranskaia’s short story «Неделя как неделя».You will also read and listen to some articles about the father’s role in the family. This lesson consists of the following sections: Проблемы равенства, Роль отца, Прошлое и будущее, and Заключение.

You can find the Помощник and Словарь (Проблемы равенства и Прошлое и будущее) at the end of the lesson for easy reference, but they are also available in the lesson in places where you are most likely to need them.

What You Will Learn:

You will learn about some of the difficulties that women faced in connection with the rights that they gained under Soviet rule. You will learn about the so-called “double burden.” You will learn some of the consequences of the attitude towards gender roles in the Soviet Union and how those are developing in Russia today. You will learn about the role of the father in the family. You will identify main ideas and their supporting details, partially true or hypothesized ideas, and propaganda and reality. You will compare your perspectives to others’ perspectives, compare two peoples’ opinions on similar topics, match subjects and predicates, and identify inconsistencies in speech.

Learning Tips:

In several activities in this lesson, you will be comparing what different people say about similar topics. Remember that similar ideas can be formulated by different people in very different ways.
