Tam O’Shanter

The Tale of Tam O’Shanter

Tam O’Shanter by Robert Burns in 1790 is a Scottish poem telling of a man who too often drinks hard at the local tavern, drawing his wife’s disapproval. After one long evening, an inebriated Tam rides homeward on his horse. As he travels, he notices a group of witches dancing wildly in a nearby church. His loud remarks attract their attention and they soon race after Tam and his galloping horse. He barely escapes their grasp, but his horse is not as lucky. As we can see on the jugs, the horse’s tail gets snatched by the witches.
