Drinking: Men Behaving Badly

Toby Philpot

The “Toby Jug”, otherwise known as “Tobias Phillpot” or “Toby Fillpot”, originated and popularized in England during the 19th century. Toby is generally depicted as an overweight, seated male that wears a three-cornered hat on his head, has a jug of beer on his knee, or a pipe in his hand. The character is boisterous and comical, which can be identified through the exaggerated facial features. Can you imagine the character depicted on the jug Toby Philpot enjoying the night at a pub?
