Design: Jugs as Morality, Taste, and Identity

Vines in Framework: Design, Taste, and Class

The Art-Union for December 1846 published a drawing of William Ridgway’s design for Vines in Framework.  It effusively praised the “form, proportion and decoration.” The design was not perfect because the ornament of the handle did not fit the naturalism of the body. Nonetheless, “the vine is a successful study of nature, and therefore excellent.”
