HDFS Generative AI and Program Milestones
Students are responsible for the content of their work. If students use generative AI in any fashion for program milestones (i.e., thesis, preliminary exam, dissertation), they must:
- Complete the Generative AI Survey to indicate the ways AI was used.
- Include a statement that fully describes the ways AI was used (e.g., developing analytic or visualization code, creating paper outline, editing grammar, making suggestions for analytic tests, reviewing literature).
- Discuss their planned use of generative AI with their advisor and committee members and update them with any changes to this plan.
Students should be aware of potential problems with use of generative AI including: a) Plagiarism – cutting and pasting content or only slightly modifying it without citation constitutes academic misconduct; b) Incorrect information – AI can generate inaccurate or misleading information; and c) Lack of in-depth understanding – an over-reliance on AI could result in the student not having an in-depth grasp of the content. Generative AI is not a substitute for original work and critical thinking.
