This is the fourth lesson based on an interview with Russian historian Aleksandr Logunov. You will watch two clips from an interview with Professor Logunov, review a clip from the first lesson of the series, and complete exercises based on those clips. You will also read and listen to texts about some important events from the period of the Khrushchev administration, and complete exercises based on them. The lesson consists of the sections: Введение, Взлеты и падения, Внешняя политика, Эпопея с кукурузой, and Заключение.

You can find the Помощник and Словарь at the end of the lesson for easy reference, but they are also available in the lesson in places where you are most likely to need them.

What You Will Learn:

In this lesson you will learn about some important events of the period of the Khrushchev administration and you will learn about how these events were seen then, and how they are appraised now. You will compare opinions about Khrushchev. You will learn about the American and Soviet press coverage of Khrushchev’s visit to the United States. You will also learn about the infamous shoe-banging incident at the United Nations and about some of the issues faced by Khrushchev’s translators. You will make predictions about the content of a video clip based on gestures, assess the truth value of statements based on a text, and identify Khrushchev as an example of a more general historical phenomenon. You will identify the sources of opinions and point of view.

Learning Tips:

You will need to review information from the first lesson in this series based on the interview with Aleksandr Logunov. You will also use information from this lesson in the next and final lesson of this series in order to predict what you will learn and make connections between the two lessons.
