Lesson 5: Никита Хрущёв и оттепель

могила ХрущёваLesson Description:

If this is the first time you are using a RAILS lesson, we recommend that you take a look at the page About the lessons to make sure that you understand how some features of the lessons work.

This is the fifth lesson based on an interview with Russian historian Aleksandr Logunov. You will watch three clips from an interview with Professor Logunov, review a clip from the fourth lesson of the series, and complete exercises based on those clips. You will also listen to texts about some events of Khrushchev’s time, read some texts, and complete exercises based on them. This lesson consists of the sections: Введение, Две грани характера Хрущева, Хрущев как абсолютный лидер, and Заключение.

You can find the Помощник and Словарь at the end of the lesson for easy reference, but they are also available in the lesson in places where you are most likely to need them.

What You Will Learn:

In this lesson, you will learn about Khrushchev’s “Secret Speech,” about the publication of Solzhenitsyn’s One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, about the exhibition in the Manezh, about Khrushchev’s grave, and about Khrushchev’s influence on Gorbachev and perestroika. You will also learn about the two sides of Khrushchev and his role as the leader of a totalitarian country. You will work with main ideas, the structure of an argument, how opinions are identified as opinions, and examples and digressions. You will also work on identifying narrators and understanding humor.

Learning Tips:

What you learned in the previous lesson about Khrushchev is very relevant to this lesson as well. Your response to many of the summative activities in this lesson will be enriched if you keep what you learned in both lessons in mind as you complete them.
